Joyner Lucas Finds His Dream Feature on “Will”

I’m feelin’ like Will, I think I’m a prince, I’m feelin’ myself
I’m loaded with bills ’cause I wasn’t blessed with no Uncle Phil
Don’t know how it feels, I wanted to flex, they told me to chill
I’m makin’ a flip, my life is a flick, come load up the film

Joyner Lucas begins “Will”—the 17th track off his debut album ADHD—with a simple, catchy chorus that pays tribute to his childhood idol: Will Smith.

In addition to referencing Will Smith’s 1990’s hit show The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Joyner also writes lyrics that allude to nine additional Will Smith movies, including Bad Boys, Men in Black, I Am Legend, I, Robot, and The Pursuit of Happyness.

Joyner released an eye-opening and creative music video the same day, in which he portrays Will Smith in all ten film productions he references throughout the song. Released on behalf of Twenty Nine Music Group, the video currently sits at over 25 million views.

The day that Joyner released the single and accompanying video for “Will”, Will Smith posted an Instagram that featured the music video, along with a special message to Joyner, congratulating the Worcester, MA native. “Yo. That joint is crazy… I am humbled and honored.”

But the mutual praise and admiration did not stop there. Less than two months after the release of “Will”, Joyner Lucas and Will Smith teamed up for a remix of the original song. The remix features Joyner’s original hook with one long, expletive-free verse from the Fresh Prince.

Will Smith makes it a point that he has
Sixty million records sold, I was on fire, I ain’t even need a grill
Did it all with no cuss words, I ain’t have to curse just to keep it real

In addition to Will Smith’s promise not to use swear words in his verses, the original “Will” by Joyner Lucas is his first-ever song on streaming platforms that is not explicit.

Will Smith also acknowledges being one of Joyner’s role models, and starts his verse by paying homage to a few of his own idols:

On top of my dreams, Joyner, I know you inspired by me
Like I was inspired by Nelson Mandela, I give him a rose for every endeavor
And shoutout to Julius Erving, one of the legends I worship (Worship)
Muhammad Ali put the work in, he was the champ, the greatest, he earned it

Will Smith also pays homage back to Lucas, claiming,

“Joyner Lucas wasn’t made to lose
You a legend in the makin’ too
What a beauty, my life’s a movie
I swear I’m only on take two
All my kids turned out great and I know your son gon’ be great too

The music video for “Will (Remix)” features Smith and Joyner’s Bitmoji bobblehead figures, with nostalgic images of Mandela, Ali, and Erving accompanying Smith’s lyrics. The remix is currently approaching eight million views just eight days after the release date.
